USTA Mentorship programme members Dr Gulzat Botoeva and Dr Assel Tutumlu joined A Chat in the Yurt podcast for a conversation.
Hosted by Dr Rashid Gabdulhakov and Kamila Smagulova, A Chat in the Yurt is a monthly product of Europe Central Asia Monitoring (EUCAM) project of the Centre for European Security Studies (CESS).
In this episode, we discussed the origins of USTA and its activities. We also reflected on the existing structural injustices and challenges in academia. For instance, is the process of teaching someone the rules of the game in academic publishing, which is rather Western-centric (knowledge production is predominantly in English and major publishing houses are located in Western countries) a manifestation of colonialism? We elaborated on what USTA programme is doing to overcome this challenge by giving Central Asian scholars the tools for publishing and defying epistemic injustices of knowledge-production.
So, give it a listen and learn about USTA story, a reflection on the rules of the game in academia, a profile of our mentees and mentors, our writing marathons and the upcoming events.
